Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls or the smoke that thunders (Mosi oa-Tunya) is an apex of rain, river and rainbow. Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world for an immaculate reason; it takes visitors to the edge of the sky and smokey water. Straddling Zambia and Zimbabwe, about three-quarters of this natural wonder, can be seen from Zimbabwe with the remaining portion from Zambia.

Standing at twice the height of Niagara Falls, 108 metres (354 ft) and with a combined width of 1,708 metres (5,604 ft) averaging at about 10 football pitches, Victoria Falls is not for the fainthearted. It is a roaring natural sight to behold and a sensory experience that pulls viewers with its thunderous resonance, the incessant sheet of water, the refreshing spray of rain, the sweet scent of the tropics and the taste of cloudy smoke of water.

Victoria Falls possesses the gift of a unique phenomenon that is only possible in two places around the world. The Moonbows is a fantasy arch that only occurs when the glow of the moon strikes the water of the falls. Visitors will be left mesmerised by the perfect arch that spans the whole fall with vivid rainbow colours.

There are many ways to witness this awesome wonder of the world, sky diving, vantage points, hikes, rafting and all to suit your travel personality. Visitors are warned that they will undoubtedly get wet and should embrace the experience by coming prepared in swimsuits, ponchos and protective equipment for their tech.

The Knife-edge Bridge perhaps the most popular viewpoint allows grand views of the Eastern Cataract, the Main falls and the Boiling Pot.

Devils Cataract situated on the Zimbabwe side of the Falls is the lowest of the five falls at 60 m, however, the density of the tropics near this side of the falls is the ideal habitat for certain beautiful African birds such as the Trumpeter Hornbill and African Paradise Flycatcher.

Livingstone Island, on the Zambia side named after David Livingstone the first European to write about his experience witnessing this wonder, is also a great location to view the falls. Visitors can walk on water to the Island when the river depth is low.

There are countless companies that cherish Victoria Falls and centre complete experiences possessing in-depth knowledge for visitors who want to raft, take a boat, bungee jump from Victoria bridge or simply live life on the edge.

Helicopter flights are also available for reasonable prices that will take riders to new heights for scenic views.

The falls are surrounded by countless pleasures, with lodges and hotels that understand the uniqueness of their experience. Visitors can even indulge in the Elephant Walk Shopping & Artist’s Village to experience the local artistry that has been preserved for centuries. Taste Zimbabwean coffee that prides itself on a wine-like flavour with a general sweet fruit power, explore Zimbabwean cuisine of tropical and vibrant flavours and delve into the culture and history of Zimbabwe and Victoria falls at the Jafuta Heritage Center.
